If you will put your faith in the Love that Jesus Christ has for you and for your wife - He will help you to discover that His love will not let you lock yourself in the prison cell of your painful or bitter memories. His love can set you free from the demeaning misery of yesterday's pain. The Merciful Father's Love for you, sean, will generate enough energy, finally, to say; "I have had enough, I am not going to put myself down by letting somebody's low blow keep hurting me forever." And so you begin forgiving.
Now you can reverse your focus and point HIS love for you, His Love in you, through you toward your wife who hurt you. His Love enabes you to love her too, no matter how mean, cruel, or terrible, unfair she has been. Just as, imperfect human love, gets us into a crisis, the Father's Love gives us the power to get out of it.
If you can avoid any of love's commitments, you can live a long time without ever having to forgive. But anyone whose love dares to commit him is a candidate for forgiving. For when love commits you, it opens you up to hurts from people who go back on their commitments. Hate, resentment, bitterness, unforgiveness lacks staying power to create a fairer future beyond revenge. It is forgiveness that supplies the healing stream of the long-term tomorrows. For the long distance, forgiving is stronger.
sean, keep in mind, if you are trying to forgive, even if you manage forgiving in fits and starts, if you forgive today, but not again tomorrow, and have to forgive again the next day, you are a forgiver. Most of us are amateurs, bungling duffers sometimes...so what? When it comes to forgiving, we are all beginners. We are faulty people who need to forgive each other.
Pray and draw close to The One who forgave you for wounding Him. He understands what you're going through. Your Righteous Father Loves you and He loves your wife. The best source of wisdom and counsel, healing and restoration for any of us, sean, is to make the LORD Jesus number One in our life. He is the repairer of things that get broken. He will help you and your wife, bless your marriage, and show you both the joy of marriage as you learn the joy of His Salvation. . Amen and Amen
