How To Read Scriptures

Dear friends, for those who have a desire to love and follow God, it is of singular importance to study and take ownership of Scriptures. Scriptures have both the quality of being practical and supernatural. It is powerful in a way that frequently we are unable to perceive, yet evident if we observe closely.
... Man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of the LORD. (Deut 8:3)
For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. (Heb 4:12)
... the sacred writings ... are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work. (2 Tim 3:15-17)
The following are some practical suggestions that could help understand and interpret scriptures better.
1. It is very helpful to have one compact bible that you can carry around everywhere, one larger study bible, and if possible a bible software (I recommend the one by Bible Works). I recommend the NAS (NOT the updated version).
2. Read slowly (the scriptures are quite technical), and if necessary repeat as many times as possible, study the texts, try to pay attention to details.
3. It is best to ignore the chapter and verse numeration as we read.
4. Pretend the titles (which have been placed for guidance but sometimes it hinders correct reading and bible interpretation) are not there.
5. Remember the context and background for what is being read
6. Ask yourself what is God and also the WRITER (eg, Luke, Moses, Paul, etc) trying to convey.
7. Frequently biblical interpretation is literal.... most of scriptures is historical documentation, and the prophecies are pretty straight forward.... there are certain parts that are more symbolic in nature.
